Global warming may have played a major part in a spate of fatal accidents on Britain's highest mountains.
Mountaineering experts said yesterday that the warming climate meant that traditional snow and ice climbs were becoming more dangerous.
While the country experiences some of the warmest winter weather on record, five people have died in climbing accidents in the Cairngorms since November, and one man died and 10 more were rescued on the Scottish hills at the weekend.

advertisement John Allen, leader of the Cairngorm mountain rescue team, said the lack of snow and ice also made routes that should be relatively simple much more challenging.

He added: "When the snow isn't there, you have fewer options. You have to be more precise and more of gymnast. It's a completely different way of climbing."

His comments were supported by Ian Robertson, 71, the president of the Munro Society, who has seen a dramatic decline in the amount of snow on the Scottish hills over the past 50 years. "I'd say the weather was very probably a factor in what went wrong at the weekend," he said.
